Enhancing Effective
De-escalation and Crisis Response Training for Law Enforcement

Agencies can benefit from national guidance when building, selecting, and implementing de-escalation training. Explore a national, evidence-informed approach designed to promote consistency, effectiveness, and safety.

Building a Process to Support Safer Policing

De-escalation training has shown promise in reducing use of force incidents and the frequency of injuries to officers and community members. Until now, there has been no national guidance for law enforcement agencies to select effective, evidence-informed training. Training programs vary widely across the country, leaving agencies without a clear way to understand what works.

The National Policing Institute (NPI), in partnership with the Institute for Intergovernmental Research (IIR), is partnering with the COPS Office and other Department of Justice (DOJ) partners to develop a national, standards-based process for reviewing and approving de-escalation and related training curricula, advancing the goals of the bipartisan Law Enforcement De-escalation Training Act of 2022.

What’s next?

NPI is currently developing and piloting a process to review, approve, and continuously assess de-escalation training curricula. When it’s complete:

Public and private entities that provide training to law enforcement officers and covered mental health professionals will be invited to submit training curricula for expert review at no cost.

Training curricula that are approved will be featured in a public catalog of approved de-escalation training curricula.

Feedback and recommendations will be provided to training entities whose curricula do not meet the standards.
